Description
An early morning autumn image of Hawksbill Crag, also known as Whitaker Point. Captured in the Arkansas Ozark, this local attraction draws many visitors worldwide. Disney filmed the opening to "Tuck Everlasting" in this extraordinary location. A journey to the hawksbill requires a six miles drive on a dirt road via county road 5. There are two access points from county road 5. Depending on weather and road conditions, it's reasonably accessible with almost any vehicle. The trailhead is clearly marked and provides ample parking. However, the lot can fill up quickly on the weekends, especially during the autumn season. Indeed, it's common for hundreds of people to visit during the fall.
Throughout the brief 1.5-mile hike, you can expect many beautiful scenes, including a wet weather creek bed with a small waterfall. To fully appreciate the beauty of Hawksbill Crag, I recommend an early morning or late evening arrival. Also, make sure to plan enough time for a leisurely pace. As with any hike in the mountains, beware of the dangers of walking along the cliff's edge.
Photographers often seek out Whitakers Point for its striking features and picturesque allure. Nevertheless, I don't feel any photograph can render justice to this epic vista. For a total appreciation of this spectacular view, one must see it in person!
